Dear Mr. West

Dear Mr. West,

I write you today as a friend. I know we don’t know each other, so just take my word on that.

I’m a black guy from the suburbs. I’m the classic too black for white people, but too white for back people. When everyone was rocking white tees to their knees, I was shopping at Gap for polos. I was a freshman in college when “through the wire” dropped. Your story inspired me, and I was intrigued to learn more about you.

You helped me become more comfortable with who I was. I’d never seen a rapper like you before. You had the backpack swag, but still connected with the streets. You were doing songs with Talib Kweli, Mos Def and Common, then could turn around and collab with Jay-Z, Cam’ron and Freeway. Your versatility was unmatched. Your albums were basically a soundtrack of my college years through my early twenties.

Remember when you said George Bush doesn’t care about black people? It seems like you’ve experienced a flash from one of the Men in Black pens, so I’ll remind you. You were part of a Red Cross campaign raising money for Hurricane Katrina victims. You deviated from the script, and to Michael Myers horror, uttered “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

As our friendship grew over the years, I learned to accept your faults. I’ve had the conversation with multiple people about how they used to like you,

but think you’re a douche and don’t fuck with you anymore. I didn’t always agree with your words or actions, but like any good friend, I had your back.

I started getting worried about you after your mom passed. I know she was a big part of your life, so I can’t imagine the pain that came along with that. I loved the way you channeled that pain into 808’s and Heartbreak’s, but you started to become harder to defend after that. Your behavior became even more erratic, and you seemed to change everything you used to be about.

Your recent tweets and photos praising Trump inspired me to write this letter. I was a little upset when I first saw them. I wanted to tell you how you were losing the people who defended you through it all over the years. I thought about it, and who am I to judge who you’re friends with? You guys are perfect for each other. You’re both a little delusional, have a god complex and don’t seem to think very much before talking.

I’m still gonna bump your music, but I think it’s best we put our friendship on hold. People change and grow apart over the years, so don’t take this personal. We may not rock with each other the same, but there’s no Ill will.

Your friend,

A Mo.
